Barbell plate calculator
Type the weight you want on the bar and see exactly which plates go on each side. Works with lb or kg plates, standard or lighter bars, and the plates your gym has.
How to use it
Pick your units, type the weight you want in total (bar included) and choose your bar. Untick any plates your gym doesn’t have. The calculator uses the fewest plates that make the weight, heaviest first.
Loading tips
- Heaviest plates on first, closest to the middle, then smaller ones outward.
- Load one plate at a time on each side, so the bar doesn’t tip if it’s on a rack.
- Always use collars. Plates slide as the bar tilts. See what to wear and bring.
- Check the bar. Not every bar weighs 45 lb or 20 kg. If it’s not stamped on the end, ask.

Questions
How much does a barbell weigh?
A standard gym barbell weighs 45 lb or 20 kg. Some gyms also have lighter bars, often 35 lb or 15 kg, and short technique bars. Many bars have the weight stamped on the end; if not, ask the staff.
What if I can't make the exact weight?
The calculator shows the closest weight below it. Small plates (2.5 lb or 1.25 kg) let you make smaller jumps. If your gym doesn’t have them, do an extra rep or two at the lighter weight before moving up.
Do collars count toward the weight?
Spring clips weigh very little, so most people don’t count them. Heavier competition collars do add weight: check what’s stamped on them.
Which plates go on first?
The heaviest go on first, closest to the middle, then smaller ones outward. Load both sides the same, then put a collar on each side.
