Wear and bring

  • Set the rack's safety bars (or use a spotter) so you can drop a failed rep safely.
  • Clips (collars) on both ends so plates can't slide off.

What to wear and bring to the gym

Key cues

  1. Eyes under the bar, feet flat on the floor.
  2. Squeeze your shoulder blades together and down.
  3. Bar touches your lower chest.
  4. Elbows about 45° from your body, not flared straight out.

How to do it

  1. Lie on the bench with your eyes under the bar.
  2. Grip slightly wider than shoulder-width and squeeze your shoulder blades together.
  3. Lift the bar off the hooks and hold it over your shoulders with straight arms.
  4. Lower it with control to your lower chest.
  5. Press it back up over your shoulders.

Common mistakes

Bouncing the bar off the chestTouch, then press. Use less weight.
Elbows flared out wideTuck them to about 45°. It's easier on the shoulders.

Stop if

Stop if you feel sharp or pinching pain in your shoulders, elbows or chest, numbness or tingling, or pain that gets worse with each rep. Burning in the working muscles, heavy breathing and shaky last reps are normal effort.
